File name | Using Short Message Service (SMS) to create an electronic immunization registry to increase timeliness and completeness of vaccinations in low resource settings |
File Description | Background: Electronic immunization registries (EIRs) have been known
to increase timeliness and completeness of vaccination due to their capability for
longitudinal follow up of children and consolidation of vaccination records across
many health providers. Due to financial and technological challenges, EIRs have
not been implemented in many developing countries and especially Africa. This study
aims at creating a simple and cost-effective electronic immunization registry that
uses simple technology (USSD technology) that can easily be scaled up to many geographical
areas especially in low resource settings. Objectives: 1. To digitize the birth register in near real time using
SMS (USSD) technology to provide vaccination denominator for automated SMS reminders.
2. To digitize the immunization register in near real time using SMS(USSD) technology
3. To assess user acceptability and satisfaction of using SMS (USSD) technology
to create EIR .4 To determine impact of using EIR on timeliness of vaccinations.
5. To determine impact of using EIR on individual and population vaccination coverage Study design: This will be a prospective cohort study where all children
born in the study area will be recruited into the study. This birth cohort will
be followed up for the entire study period. The outcomes (timeliness and completeness
of vaccination before and after intervention) will be compared with a control cohort
(unmatched) randomly selected from another sub county in the same study county.
Study duration: The study will take 1 year to implement Texila |
