File name | Reduction in Maternal Mortality - What can Nigeria Learn from the Success of Bangladesh |
File Description | Despite
international commitments to reduce maternal mortality, hundreds of thousands
of women continue to die globally every year from pregnancy and child birth
related causes. While some countries have made significant progress in reducing
maternal mortality ratio (MMR), some countries are yet to substantially reduce
high MMR trend. Bangladesh and Nigeria are two countries that in addition to
parallel population, also share similar socio-economic characteristics. These
two countries both had MMR that were considered high in 1990. MMR in Bangladesh
(724) was almost twice that of Nigeria (473). However, MMR has significantly
reduced in Bangladesh from 724 in 1990 to 194 in 2010. Considering the
importance of ensuring effective maternal health service delivery, the MMR in
Nigeria which stands at 608 per 100,000 live births is an issue of great
concern. Hence, a literature review was conducted to assess what Nigeria can
learn from the successful maternal health intervention in Bangladesh. |
