File name | MARRIED WOMEN'S PERSPECTIVES ON THE QUALITY OF FAMILY PLANNING COUNSELLING IN SANTA DISTRICT HOSPITAL - CAMEROON |
File Description | Many
cases of maternal death and disability in Cameroon result from the unsafe
abortions that many women resort to when faced with an unintended pregnancy.
According to some studies, roughly 40% of all pregnancies in the country are
unintended, and 36% of these unintended pregnancies end in abortion. Abortion
is highly restricted, so the vast majority of procedures are clandestine and
carry a high risk of complications that endanger women's health and lives. Use
of family planning (FP) methods can contribute to a substantial reduction in
fertility and reduce the proportion of unwanted pregnancies as well as maternal
deaths that would otherwise occur. The counselling provided by a family
planning (FP) program plays a key role in FP uptake and continuation and is
essential for ensuring informed and voluntary decision making—one of three
elements comprising the fundamentals of care. Yet studies conducted worldwide
by the ACQUIRE Project and others have repeatedly shown that the quality of FP
counselling is weak because providers' skills are inadequate. The qualitative
study set out to evaluate the quality of Family Planning counselling delivered
to women attending IWC at the Santa District Hospital in the North West region
of Cameroon; by evaluating their responses concerning the content of the counselling
(i.e. whether they were informed of other methods, apart from the one they are
currently using, whether they were told about the potential side-effects of
each method and whether they were informed about the side effects and what to
do in case they noticed any). Twenty women were recruited for the study and
according to the majority (especially those with higher educational levels),
the information they received was adequate but certain aspects of the
interpersonal relationship between them and the providers like respect,
maintenance of privacy still had to be worked upon by most providers. The
inadequate therapeutic relationship between users and clients could be
responsible for the low uptake of family planning in the area. |
