File name | Intermediary Metabolism - Lipid Metabolism |
File Description | Lipid metabolism refers to the processes that involve the intercourse and degradation of lipids. Fats are generally the major source of energy in human tissues, mainly in the liver and in muscle, except for red cells and brain (which mainly depend on glucose for energy). Triacylglycerols (TG) are the storage and transport form of fats; fatty acids are the immediate source of energy. Fatty acids are released from the adipose tissue, transported bound to albumin in the blood plasma and delivered to cells for metabolism. Fatty acids are catabolised by an oxidative process called β oxidation in the mitochondria and peroxisomes |
