File name | Incidence, Correlates And Improvement Strategies Involved In Neonatal Mortality |
File Description | The current chapter provides a review of definitions, incidence, correlates and global magnitude of neonatal mortality. The chapter also presents evidence based strategies to improve neonatal survival particularly in resource constrained developing countries. The neonatal period is the extra uterine continuum of intrauterine foetal life separated by birth, which is the time when umbilical cord is severed. During the intrauterine period, foetal life is dependent on its connection with the uterus through the placenta and umbilical cord. The neonatal period is further sub-divided into early and late neonatal periods (WHO, 2011b). Early neonatal period corresponds to the first seven completed days of life (day 0 to 6) while the late neonatal period lasts from day 7 to day 27 |
