File name | FACTORS INFLUENCING IMMUNIZATION COVERAGE OF CHILDREN BELOW FIVE YEARS IN MATHARE SLUMS HEALTH FACILITIES IN MATHARE CONSTITUENCY |
File Description | Immunization is a proven tool for controlling and
eliminating life-threatening infectious diseases and is estimated to avert 2 to
3 million deaths each year worldwide. However, in most countries including
Kenya, immunization coverage for children under 5 years has not been optimum to
reach instil herd immunity for some preventable diseases. A case of Mathare
health centre where the coverage for measles vaccine was average of 60% in the second
quota in 2014 according to Nairobi Health Records Department. Based on this
report, the study aimed at establishing the factors that influenced
immunization coverage among children below five years in Mathare slums health
facilities of Mathare constituency. Objectives were to; determine the socio
demographic factors of care givers influencing immunization; to determine if
care givers knowledge and attitude towards immunization influenced coverage; to
identify the socio economic factors influence immunization coverage and to
establish health facility factors influencing immunization coverage in Mathare Constituency.
The study adopted a descriptive survey where 339 respondents (care-givers) that
visited Mathare health centre for either immunization services or to seek
medical attention were interviewed. Questionnaires and a checklist written in
English were used. Collected data processing was done using SPPS. Presentation
of findings was done by use of pie charts, bar graphs and frequency
distribution tables. With regard to socio demographic factors, the researcher
found out that majority of the care giver were women aged below 35years.
Majority of them had basic education and 4-7 children. While majority were
literate enough to be educated on immunization coverage strategies, religious
affiliations affected immunization coverage. Poverty, lack of employment has
led to residents over-depending on the public health facility available -
Mathare health centre for immunization services. Facility factors such as more
than two hours wait before being attended also influence immunization coverage.
Routine health education was not sufficiently done. The study recommends provision
of adequate staff at Mathare health centre to ease congestion and reduce
waiting time before patients are served; monthly out - reach clinics to
increase reach of immunization services; the health centre management explore
use of other strategies to enhance immunization reach more people; community
entry approaches be designed to involve women more as they form the bulk of
those involved in care giving of under five |
