File name | Difference Between LBW And Preterm Babies |
File Description | Preterm infants are born before 37 weeks gestation. Late preterm infants are born between 34 and 36 weeks gestation. They have a better outlook than infants born before 32 weeks gestation, known as early preterm births. An infant is described as having a low birth weight if she weighs less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces at birth. While prematurity is the major cause of low birth weight, sometimes full term infants will also have a low birth weight. Infants born at a low birth weight are at a higher risk for developing high blood pressure when they are adults. Preterm infants are more likely to be at risk for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, learning disabilities and vision problems. Both groups have an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes, however. |
