File name | Assessing barriers to the application of the nursing process in the Regional Hospital Bamenda |
File Description | Implementation
of the nursing process in some healthcare settings especially low and
middle-income countries remains a challenge. This study set out to assess
barriers to the application of the nursing process at the Regional Hospital
Bamenda. A descriptive cross sectional study was carried out with a sample size
of 65 nursing staff as participants. Data were collected using a
self-administered questionnaire. It was found that 68% of the participants did
not know the steps of the nursing process; the nursing process was mostly
applied by younger nurses between 21-30 years old and 67.8 % made use of the
nursing care plan. However, only 6.8 % of the participants could outline in
order the steps of the nursing process. Institutionally, the nursing process
was poorly applied because of non-recognition of those who made an effort
(75%); no monitoring (60%) and inadequate resources (50%). Socioculturally, no
significant barrier was observed. Application of the nursing process was found
to be negatively affected by demographic and institutional factors. Key words: application, barriers, implementation, nurse, nursing process, nursing
