File name | Measuring Abdominal Fat |
File Description | Total body fat is an important risk factor for chronic disease. However abdominal fat and in particular, visceral fat, is increasingly recognised as the critical fat depot associated with metabolic aberrations. Consequentially, it is important to measure an individual's abdominal fat reliably and with relative ease, both in research and clinical practice. 120 participants were recruited, stratified by gender and BMI. Participants had triplicate measures of total and abdominal fat by three bioelectrical impedance devices, the AB-140, MC-180 and BC-420 and waist circumference measurements using a manual tape measure. Participants also had total body, trunk and abdominal fat measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). A single abdominal MRI scan was used as the reference method to measure total abdominal and visceral fat. |
