Health & Nutritional Surveillance for Development | |
File name | Health & Nutritional Surveillance for Development |
File Description | While the global consensus on the new development paradigm is a promising start, developing and implementing effective and sustainable solutions in the countries that most need attention is no less of a challenge. Nutritional surveillance systems, which can be used for monitoring and evaluation, have an important place in both industrialized and low-income countries in gathering, processing and analyzing household-level information on nutritional and health indicators to monitor public health problems and guide policy decisions, programs and services to address the problems. Based on UNICEF's conceptual framework on the causes of malnutrition, nutritional surveillance aims to fully understand the complex interactions of underlying factors that contribute to inadequate nutrition. With the capacity to investigate complex relationships through comprehensive, population-based survey methodologies, nutritional surveillance systems can widen their scope beyond health and nutrition to contribute to monitoring progress on the MDGs. |
